What is health? According to World Health Organisation it is a state of complete physical, mental and social wellbeing, not merely the absence of disease or infirmity. Homeopaths, as well as many other CAM (complementary and alternative medicine) practitioners see health as state of balance. We perceive the lack of homeostasis to be the source of disease.
Homeopathy is a 200-year old holistic system of medicine. It treats the person as a whole -both body and mind. Any health problems are seen as an expression that the organism is out of balance. Therefore during homeopathic treatment, a practitioner takes the full symptom picture of a patient (physical, mental and emotional). All symptoms are considered to be important because they are manifestations of a lack of inner equilibrium.
There is a significantly different approach to health between conventional medicine and homeopathy. Modern doctors rely mainly on chemical or mechanical intervention to assist the human body (drugs and surgery). Unfortunately this has direct effect on the body’s natural processes, which in many cases can produce adverse side effects. Homeopathy on the other hand relies on the body’s natural abilities to heal itself.
In homeopathy we see immune our system to be the true healer. Without the right nutrition, sufficient exercise or time to rest and relax, the body cannot maintain its balance. Toxicity from drugs, heavy metals or environmental chemicals only add to the problem. The more our bodies have to take on, the more they become out of balance. In today’s world we see so many patients whose organs tend to be overloaded (usually liver as it’s the main toxin filter of the body). It all gradually leads to a decrease in health and eventually to dis-ease. Emotions also greatly influence our health. The way we feel emotionally will eventually reflect itself in our body, often due to different hormonal changes that occur while we are scarred, happy, angry, sad, etc.
These are all examples of factors that need to be looked at if a person wants to be healthy. Disease symptoms are not produced randomly by the body- there is always a cause.
This is why homeopathy is holistic medicine- as it looks at the bigger picture. The main tools for a practitioner are homeopathic remedies. These are highly diluted substances used to stimulate the immune system to do its job. But lets not forget that they trigger immune response and NOT work directly on the symptoms through chemical action (like drugs do). Homeopathy always looks for the root causes and does not focus merely on presenting symptoms. It is all about restoring health- gently and without side effects.
Of course there is a time and place for everything. Modern medicine has wonderful diagnostic tools (blood tests, x-rays, MRI scans, etc) and it is extremely valuable in acute situations. Let’s not forget that without modern medicine we would not have such a high accident survival rate!
As in life - it’s all about the right balance!
